(Trent) The great thing about being a newlywed not owning a house and not having a pet or child is the fact that when something comes up we can drop everything and go. That was the case this Sunday during Memorial Day weekend. Holly and I didn't really have plans. We also remembered that my dad was a bachelor this weekend because my mom was spending the weekend with some high school friends. So we called him to see if we could cook him dinner. He let us know that he was staying at the ranch doing some spring cleaning. But we soon got a text from him asking if we wanted to canoe the Brazos River! This was about 8:30 Saturday night. Needless to say we jumped at the opportunity and at 10:30 that night we were getting ready for bed at the ranch. At 8:30 in the morning we were on our way to Rochelle's river service. By 9:00 a.m. we were in the river with a canoe, kayak and bluebonnet (dad's chocolate lab). The weather was almost perfect. It wasn't as hot as it had been earlier in the week. The half day canoe trip is 10 miles down the Brazos. At about lunchtime we pulled off the river onto a little sand barge. Luckily we found a tree willing to provide us some shade from the sun. As we relaxed eating an impromptu picnic Bluebonnet entertained herself swimming and chasing dragonflies. Again the weather was almost perfect but what would have made it exactly perfect would have been a nice breeze coming from the north. Well about the 9th mile we got the breeze we wanted. The only problem is the breeze was coming from the south. The last mile we worked harder than we had to for the first 9 miles! When we finally made it back to the ranch we were all very tired and sore. But I will say that it was the best Sunday for Memorial Day weekend! The river was so peaceful. And to be out on the river with my wife (only a week away from our 1 year anniversary!) as well as my dad was something I will never forget.
