Our Peanut

It has been awhile but for good reason.  September 12, 2011 will be a day we never forget.  Holly hadn't been feeling well the weeks leading up to that Monday so we were thinking about going to the doctor.  But before we did that we decided to take a pregnancy test (just in case).  That morning Holly took the test and we both sat on the bathtub in silence as the test showed we were pregnant!!  This was something we hadn't planned.  We thought it would be 3-5 years before we started having kids, but we always knew that God's plan would trump our own.  So while this was unexpected it was a complete surprise.  Before Holly left for school she told me that we would never refer to this baby as an accident but only as a gift from God.

We both went to work that day in a fog.  I was flooded with emotions of happiness and then stress thinking how as everyone said this will be a "game changer". At this point I hadn't made up my mind about if we had passed the pregnancy test or failed it.  On my way home from work I bought another pregnancy test and met Holly at the door ready for her to take this second test for further confirmation.  If the first test left some doubt the second test wiped it all away. The plus sign appeared so fast as if it already had anticipated the result.  We then sat in silence for the second time that day. Thoughts going through our heads about what this would mean for our future and all of the plans we had. Moments passed and finally Holly came to the conclusion that we needed to go get a book. She knew that my sister in-law had a big book that she had read when she was pregnant. We obviously knew nothing about expecting a baby or a pregnancy in and of itself. Holly and I drove the Barnes & Noble where we bought the biggest book we could find about pregnancy. When we got in the car Holly opened it to the fist chapter. The chapter was titled, "How to get Pregnant." As soon as Holly read that out loud we began to laugh instantly, we obviously did not need help getting pregnant. We continued to read the book and figured that Holly was about 5 weeks pregnant.

Next, we experienced the wait. We couldn't really tell our friends or co-workers, and we couldn't go to the doctor for 3 more weeks to confirm that we were indeed pregnant. We felt so helpless and in the dark.

At 8 weeks we had our first doctor's visit. We saw our peanut for the fist time! For me, seeing the heartbeat was very emotional and made this completely real to me. Holly on the other hand looked at the baby as if she was looking at her enemy. Don't get me wrong, Holly is excited about becoming a mom, but she was now seeing the cause for all her "wonderful" pregnancy pains.

Holly is now 13.5 weeks pregnant. We have had our second doctor's visit and everything seems to be well with the baby. We have adjusted quickly to the idea that our lives will change come May 16, 2012 when we welcome our peanut into the world. As the days go by we will add more details into the journey we have experience and the journey to come.
